Alnmouth

Alnmouth stands beside the sandy estuary where the river Aln flows into the North Sea. Once an important grain shipping port, and reputedly smugglers haven, it is now a quiet and picturesque village with beautiful sandy beaches and one of the oldest golf courses in England. Church Hill is the site of an Anglo Saxon church and also of the great Synod of 684 in which Cuthbert was named Bishop of Lindisfarne. Alnmouth, situated on a promontory with the River Aln on one side and the North Sea and beautiful beach the other, with the advantage of traffic leading to the village only. Alnmouth makes an ideal “car free” base, with nearby mainline station (Kings Cross-Edinburgh) and regular bus service. There are a good selection of pubs serving food, a grocers, tea rooms, a Post Office and a gift shop.
