Craster

Terraces of low cottages ring the pretty harbour of the tiny village of Craster, with a small fleet of fishing boats sheltering in its harbour. The stone from which the houses were built was quarried from the whinstone on which the village stands. Craster is famous for its oak-smoked kippers. Crab and lobster can also be bought, caught by the local boats. A picturesque coastal footpath from the village across fields follows the rocky shore (idyllic for children), to the dramatic ruins of Dunstanburgh Castle. The castle is an interesting spot for birdwatchers with many species of bird nesting amongst its ruins. There is a pub, sea food restaurant and gift shops.
